Exciting Ways to Get In On The Climate Action This Climate Action Week

If you’re looking for opportunities to help build a sustainable future for Singapore, mark your calendars, because Climate Action Week 2022 is almost here!

Happening from 19–25 September 2022, this year’s event is themed Towards a Net Zero Future and features over 80 partners organising more than 130 events and activities.

Meet like-minded people, co-create solutions and discover ways to realise a net zero future. Together, we can drive climate action and achieve the goals set out in Singapore Green Plan 2030.

Embark on learning journeys and guided tours

Climate Action Week is about bringing you to places that aren’t usually accessible to members of the public.

One of these locations is the Tuas South Incineration Plant. The National Environment Agency will be organising an eye-opening learning journey to this Waste-to-Energy plant where you can learn how the plant is able to reduce waste volume by 90% while generating electricity to power up Singapore!

Other learning journeys and guided tours you can look forward to include a sustainable building tour at the PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay to learn about the hotel’s sustainability features, as well as a Forest Stream Exploration and Mangrove Night Walk by the nature guides from The Untamed Paths.

Level up your eco-know-how

Don’t miss out on exclusive opportunities to learn from eco experts during Climate Action Week!

Bjorn Low, Executive Director and co-founder of farming social enterprise Edible Garden City, will be talking about the fascinating world of natural farming and its potential for building social cohesion and integration in wellness and healthcare.

Local universities are also getting into the climate action with special week-long activities to commemorate Climate Action Week!

One of the activities organised by the NUS Enterprise is a panel discussion to discuss how social entrepreneurs can shape the climate response and to raise awareness on how climate change disproportionately affects poor and marginalised communities.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Management University will host a fireside chat themed “Towards Net Zero”, featuring panellists such as Senior Minister of State Dr Amy Khor from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Jasmine Tuan from Zero Waste SG and Sean Tan, founder of Insect Feed Technologies. They will be discussing the various facets of sustainability efforts in Singapore, explore how sustainable living practices and waste reduction initiatives will bring us closer to achieving net zero.

Also, don’t miss out on Climate Fresk, a science-based workshop by global innovation consultancy firm Palo-IT, based on a 42-card game where you’ll learn the cause-effect relationship between different components of climate change, a virtual seminar “Towards a Sustainable and Fashionable Future” by the Singapore Fashion Council and a plastics workshop by The Plastic Project to learn about Singapore’s recycling system and how plastics are processed into new, customised products.

Savour those eco-friendly deals

Throughout Climate Action Week, look out for RedMart’s special promotion featuring a curated list of about 300 green products. Use discount vouchers from DBS Bank (also a strong supporter of Climate Action Week) to enjoy further deals.

To further its efforts to reduce food wastage, foodpanda will roll out “last hour” deals where customers can get 30% off orders from Green Label merchants between 8pm to 12am, when they use the promo code <DBSGL22> during Climate Action Week. On top of reducing food wastage, customers who opt for pick-up will also be able to save approximately 31% of carbon emissions. Green Label is a first-of-its-kind programme by a food delivery company in Singapore, which identifies the most sustainable brands on the platform through a restaurant certification scheme.

Just Dabao, a social enterprise working to reduce food waste in Singapore, will also be offering a 10% discount for every purchase made through its website. Just Dabao aims to redistribute the unsold, surplus food (but still fresh and delicious!) by connecting consumers with eateries with excess food.

Take on an app-mazing challenge

Join in the islandwide activities

You don’t even need to leave your neighbourhood to take part in Climate Action Week activities. Here are some events that are happening near you!

• What are the top three litter items that residents usually find in the estate of Moulmein-Cairnhill (aka MoCa)? Come find out at the Keep Pek Kio Clean Exhibition!
• Gather your recyclables (newspaper, carton, aluminum cans, glass bottles, etc.) and bring them to the Cash-For-Trash recycling station at Blk 511 West Coast Drive. You might even get a little cash reward as a token of appreciation.
• Bring your kids to the West Coast Library for a storytelling session featuring the book Little Turtle and the Sea by Becky Davies. Join a little turtle on an adventure that reveals how his beautiful blue ocean home has changed, and what we can do to prevent it.
• Calling all Tanjong Pagar residents! Share on social media your sustainable living tips (e.g. energy-efficient appliances, cycling/walking, etc.). Remember to add hashtags such as #SGGreenPlan #ClimateActionSG #ClimateActionWeek.
• Have excess food lying around that’s non-perishable? Help reduce food wastage by donating them to Food From the Heart who will redistribute them to beneficiaries.
